Cultivate your own olive grove. Harvest the olives and press them to make oil. Sell the oil in the neighbourhood and on the market. A dream for many a farmer and one that only few can realize. We haven‘t the means either to acquire a bigger piece of arable land. But we think that those who wish to build a future for themselves should be able to do so even if they don‘t posses fertile land or the means to acquire it.
Therefore we‘ve decided to lease arable land and leave it in the hands of the future farmers for a symbolic price. Again: We are not simply distributing money – this would only lower the recipient‘s self-esteem.
First attempts with subleased vegetable gardens show that diligent workers can earn enough income after a while to successfully cultivate and even lease small pieces of land. This represents a step towards their own independence.
In the future we will attempt to lease land and assist people in earning their own living. The manner in which this happens will vary from case to case. One possibility is to lease planted olive groves or fig plantations at a small rate for cultivation. The difference between price and intake is then the worker‘s earning.
And surely, when we put the plan into practice, we will think of more ideas.
